I would never say Lobdell queercoded Jason and Roy in RHATO, but he certainly did SOMETHING by accident. In seriousness, I hate that JayRoy can’t hug because it would be gay, but this single page has been the most authentic their relationship has been all run.

BUT #2 also introduces the pockets of seriousness, with Jason checking in that Roy isn’t relapsing. Roy’s addiction in this is WAY better handled than in RHATO, it’s much more serious. I’ve actually heard of the “buying a drink to not touch it” thing before.

I absolutely do have to get into the Arrowfam. Honestly this feels very similar to what fans want from World’s Foulest/RH-SBP/PrimeHood, so I’d recommend they actually read this. I know this is N52 slop, but GOD I just found this so much more FUN than RHATO.

#12-13 also has some fun panelling with like a polaroid style throughout much of them. #13 is heartbreaking start to finish, and fills the void that RHATO left for me in many ways. Because we had that hard comedy angle in the beginning, we watched JayRoy love each other.

It doesn’t even matter ANYWAY because the guy just kamikazes himself on Roy’s arrow. It does NOTHING but separate Kori from the boys and push her to OD. This issue encapsulates RHATO; blatant mischaracterisation for no-payoff drama.

Dammit I KNOW the dialogue is 2015 as fuck, I KNOW that the N52 sacrifices like every part of Roy’s pre-established history and character, I KNOW that heroic Jason rubs people (myself included) the wrong way, but STILL I thought this was just such a fun read, way more than RHATO.

This is by far the best written and best drawn issue of the entire RHATO run, without debate. First of all, HOLY CHARACTERISATION BATMAN, we actually get Jay going out of his way to defend (what he believes to be) a defenceless woman, AND tears.

We take a short break for a Zero Year tie-in for some reason. #25 takes us to Jason’s backstory (again) and HOLY SHIT I am in awe. Tynion’s arc in RHATO hasn’t exactly been stellar but THIS is what we all needed, and proof Lobdell needs to stay away from Jay.

Unlike in RHATO, where I’m told Jay and Roy are best friends, in RH/A I SEE them be best friends. These boys love each other, so the fallout in #13 where they start fighting HURTS. This is the worst possible outcome for the both of them, their biggest fears come to life.

Or body hair! It makes Roy look like Stretch Armstrong to be hairless top to bottom. 13 year old boys know what pubes are, they definitely know what a cock looks like, we don’t NEED Roy’s cock flopping around (tho I’d love that lmao), it’s just the double standard

The way he cries to his mother that he wants so badly to help her, but doesn’t want to become like his father (a criminal). He doesn’t want to be a bad person, no matter what bad things he does he does them because he wants to HELP. I love this.

RHATO Future’s Rebirth is a special that has everyone aged up 5 years and working alone. Kori straight up just doesn’t exist in the book, and Roy and Jason are at odds. The “highlight” of the issue is, of course, COP DEFENDER JASON FUCKING TODD.

Also, we have Jason Todd willingly taking Venom to enhance himself in a fight. Let’s all bear in mind this is post-Knightfall, his mother died of an OD, and his best friend is a recovering addict. Oh, and Roy got burned to near-death by Kori. WHAT DO YOU MEAN.

There is almost no conflict between the main three at all, we have technically three separate amnesia plotlines none of which go anywhere, zero repercussions for Jason and Kori taking drugs, zero arcs for Roy, Kori’s arc gets straight up repeated.

Where the first half at least had an agenda, y’know it was pushing the sex and guns thing and was attempting to be the lowest common denominator in young male entertainment, the second half is a floundering mess of sheer nonsense.

I don’t have context, I’m going to have to read that issue in prep for Supersons anyway, but I can’t imagine what would possess Bruce to do such a thing, especially DIRECTLY AFTER JASON ALMOST JUST DIED *AGAIN* AND THEY MADE UP.

#23 has Roy, who: hasn’t slept for 3 days, is knowingly working for the biggest enemy earth has faced, is worried that Jason is going to die, and knows Kori is missing, cracking jokes. Roy also singlehandedly takes out Graystone and Cheshire. Wow.

#29 is a nothingburger, like I literally have nothing to even say other than we’ve just abandoned the villain from #28. He will never return, and Jason will not be relevant in these comics ever again. #30 is designed to completely waste your time.

Kori in a bedsheet, not looking like herself, hugging Isabel like they’re besties, Roy wearing his cap with a tux.... If the whole point is there’s no government/surveillance on this secret island why does Kori need to hide?? We’re not starting off strong here.

We also get Roy angst because he learned Kori was lying about her lost memories, and he’s upset with Jason for choosing to forget them. He even cries. The problem is idgaf because, again, we have not SEEN these developments, and there’s no resolution.

I hope we’re all ready for like 8 issues of Jason absolutely NOT being Jason! #20 starts with a flashback to Roy and Jay’s first meeting, which is cute and has great Jason characterisation, he’s sympathetic to and wants to be friends with an addict.

We get no depiction of these characters becoming close, villains are weak and leave as quickly as they show up, there are typos CONSTANTLY, there is no character development WHATSOEVER, Rose Wilson just shows up for two issues at the end, Essence just vanishes.

The issue ends with Isabel blowing the fuck out of enemies with a gun (she’s supposed to be a civilian), saying she needs permission to be normal (she was an air hostess before Jason), brackets in speech, and Isabel officially leaving Jason for good.

With nowhere to go after the Untitled arc, we go back to Isabel in #28. We start off with a good comedy moment, sorry but I will never get sick of the “NOTHING bad will happen” immediately cutting to something VERY bad happening trope.

But regardless, this is the best Jason’s been written in the run. He’s chipper and friendly, wants badly to help people, doesn’t enjoy criminal behaviour, defends the defenceless at his own risk, loves his parents, and stays true to his values no matter what.
