We are wasting so much money on always more and bigger roads, and we should cut as many of these as possible to refocus spending on active/public transport.

While the government has set an ambitious target of a 65% reduction in the numbers of people killed and seriously injured by 2035, it has allowed National Highways to get away with a paltry 7.5% reduction by 2031.
+ve words on a ‘greater focus’ on renewal but nothing to say that the bulk of this c.£25bn won’t still be spent on adding poor value road capacity. Missing the clarity of the Welsh gov’s strategic tests for road investment - particularly on alignment with climate action & achieving mode shift

In 2026, we will:
- See the extent of the government’s ambition for active travel when it publishes its next 5 year strategy.
- Know if the government is putting its money where its mouth is on prioritising road maintenance over building new roads when RIS3 is published.

THAT IS MORE THAN HS2 WOULD COST OVER THE SAME TIMEFRAME.
I have never had the capacity to fight RS2 anywhere near as much as the NIMBYs hit HS2, and one of them hurts more ancient woodland than the other. Guess which.

The inclusion of the £650m A38 Derby Junctions and £2.2bn A66 Northern Trans-Pennine schemes in RIS3 was the biggest disappointment, as they offer such poor value for money.
