The RISD Museum is giving out free admission November 3-8 to anyone who voted!

Per their newsletter, just tell their front desk staff you voted and you'll be admitted on the house.

What stays with me from Vincent Valdez’s recent RISD interview is his commitment to the daily work: drawing for at least an hour, returning to difficult subjects, and continuing through periods when progress feels invisible.

OK, I have been traveling for three weeks in a row--Toronto, Chicago, Amsterdam--and now this week RISD for the Humanities Forum keynote, which I'm super excited about, but I am very tired. Le tired would have been my halloween costume. But I have met so many very very interesting and warm people!

Brown and RISD students have taken the streets, joined by Providence community members, to demand justice for Nolan Wells and Kohen Wiley! Nolan Wells didn't drown, police executing 1 year old Kohen could never possibly be justified, and we are fed up with the racist capitalist system.

I thought having RISD and Brown would draw interesting people, that appeals to me. I do like Portland being on the water. Oh well, thanks for your thoughts.

He also speaks about an artistic lineage that includes Käthe Kollwitz, Otto Dix and Ben Shahn—artists whose command of image-making served an urgent engagement with their times.
A thoughtful read about craft, persistence, and the responsibility of looking closely.

From childhood murals in San Antonio to paintings confronting injustice and historical violence, Valdez has built a practice around the relationship between images and the people who see themselves in them.

Our cat has the worst middle child syndrome. And after his gap year traveling in Europe, followed by failing out of RISD — which we paid, no scholarship — we accept that he lives in our basement and dedicates his time fully to his garage band that plays shows only for his friends... in our basement.

Much of the transphobia against trans women athletes comes from mostly men sterotyping cis women and underestimating how strong they can be. Watch this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=risD...

Thing is, historically bands from Elsewhere move to LA to record*, but recording in LA doesn't make you an LA band.

NYC is different from that. Talking Heads is 75% RISD, nobody thinks they weren't NYC. You move to LA to get a contract, you move to NYC to be an NYC band.

A tad too far for me

Are you too young to have crossed paths with John Trengove when you were at RISD?

Most of the industrial designers I worked with went to ArtCenter but John and I worked together in a studio in LA back in the day

RISD unveils two micro‑school pilots — 'Studio' for 4th–5th and 'Lumen' for K–1 — for 2027–28
District leaders proposed two small, targeted micro‑school models to recruit and retain families: a 4th–5th hybrid 'Studio' (3 on‑campus/2 asynchronous home days) and a K–1 'Lumen Academy' (screen‑free, classical emphasis). Trustees supported concept‑level pilots and asked staff to return with implementation details.
