Chicago is breaking ground on the Red Line Extension (RLE) today.
RLE is a 5.5-mile extension of the existing L line to the south, with 4 new stations. The elevated/at grade line will cost $5.7 billion and is expected to eventually serve 41,500 daily trips.

“RLE at any cost” does indeed have some costs
Most of the CTA has improved in the last few years, but the Forest Park Blue Line has straight up been abandoned by the city

I’d go further, upzoning should be a requirement for new transit projects (cough RLE)
Upzone the state and especially the areas around Chicago L stations, ~most of which are surrounded by city law that bans apartments and condos
Ideally every unit built in IL should be within 10 minutes of a Chicago L station buy i suppose a little in each area of the state aint bad

The RLE requirement has always been hazing and an attempt to subject trans people to enough public harassment that we just give up attempting to pursue transition.
It's now been turned into a legal double bind to effectively, explicitly criminalize transition.

• It will be transformational for residents of the Far South Side
• It costs way too much
• It directly negatively impacts the CTA’s ability to do other capital projects
• It’s good that NITA is taking over capital planning
