1.1K views · 53 reactions | In celebration of influential British singer, songwriter, guitarist & 'Modfather' PAUL WELLER's Birthday today (May 25) enjoy this Roch Parisien's Rocon Communications music page exclusive audio interview I conducted with Paul when THE JAM performed in the auditorium of the Ottawa Technical High School in Ottawa, Canada on May 24 (the day before his Birthday), 1981 (exactly 44 years ago!). It was an odd, unexpected venue (with theatre seating, not allowing the audience to jump around or dance), and The Jam were not pleased. After the show, band manager (and Paul's father) John Weller selected a small group of fans to come back to the hotel after the show and "hang out" with the band. As Ottawa's then-dean of "punk-new wave" media via my CKCU-FM college radio program 'No Future Now', I had been pre-selected to join them. The band members were sullen and the "meet-up" with fans felt forced and awkward. An initial interview attempt with drummer Rick Buckler and bassist Bruce Foxton was met with largely grunted, disinterested, monosyllabic responses. Taking pity on the young, keen reporter, Paul then escorted me out the hotel room and into the hallway where he humored me for the following 15 minutes, a virtual miracle given his avowed contempt for the music press at the time.
