Tidal levels appear to be coming in a bit lower than forecast on this evening's cycle but concerned that could change for Sun am, particularly from northern NJ up into southern New England where winds should increase again later tonight and have more onshore component in some areas.

This would kill all weather model development - RRFS, HAFS, and WoFS - in NOAA. These are activities that the private sector can’t support; they leverage these models to train & benchmark their own.

Surprise, surprise...more forecast model disagreement! European & RRFS models showing vastly more rain for the Puget Sound area than others (0.5-1" vs 0.1-0.25"). Consensus for heavy rain on the WA Coast and over some wildfires in the Cascades. #wawx

Replacing the NAM and HREF with the RRFS in early 2026 is a really bad idea IMHO. The RRFS does not handle low-level cold air masses nearly as well as the NAM and a couple other HREF members, although they can be too aggressive with low-level cold air.

So this area of rain in Houston kind of came out of nowhere? No signal on HRRR, minimal useful signal on RRFS. The hell?

The physics used in even more models? Not possible without us.
Decision-support tools like DESI and IDSS Engine used throughout the NWS? Also us.

"Fun" forecast model disagreement tonight...Last 2 European model runs keep 40-50 mph gusts for the Seattle area, while the hi-res HRRR and RRFS models keep strongest winds south of Olympia, w/40-50 mph for Portland, 50-60 mph for OR & S. WA Coast. Stay tuned. #wawx #orwx

As someone who regularly forecasts severe weather, I can confidently state that decommissioning the NAM and HREF in favor of the RRFS (even though the NAM and HREF are admittedly old) is by no means an upgrade.
Noem: "Frankly, the National Weather Service under President Trump has been working to put in a new system bc it has been neglected for years. It's an ancient system that needed to be upgraded, so President Trump recognized that right away and got to work... but that installation is not complete"

Strongly disagree with this move. The RRFS is not ready for prime time. The NAM has value in corners of the universe. The HREF is a phenomenal model. This is not smart IMO.

Hot take: the RRFS is actually pretty good (even better than HRRR in some regards) for most everything but severe convection! And for that, at least deterministically, we have our developmental real-time MPAS forecasts that help demonstrate the physics + DA advances from RRFS v1 development.

So just to be clear. When using Pivotal and opting to use the RRFS, should I be looking at the RRFS A or the GSL MPAS version? I want the closest thing to whatever is getting forced on us in September.
