In 2020 I ran for school board as a relative unknown. I got connected w/ state reps @jamestalarico.bsky.social & @bucyfortexas.bsky.social. I told them I wanted RRISD to care for ALL students, not just high performing ones, and both chose to support me. Was so happy to support James in FW yesterday.

Over on X (and on Facebook) state lawmaker and former Round Rock ISD trustee are targeting trans teachers for existing. You knew it wouldn’t stop with books.
State Rep Hillary Hickland tweeted that reads, “Stop forcing “gender ideology” on our children! For heaven’s sake, what’s it gonna take to just teach them to read and do math? Schools are for academics.” Tweet from former RRISD trustee Mary Bone featuring an image of a text that says there are “two other female teachers pretending to be males” in Leander High School, “a chemistry teacher and the theater teacher.” Bone’s message reads: “After posting about the male teacher at Leander HS dressing as a woman a community member sent me this. @LeanderISD what are you doing? @GregAbbott_TX is this what Texas wants our children to be forced to participate in?”

During the run-up to the #RRISD bond election, the antis started insinuating that the district was misrepresenting or possibly fraudulently reporting enrollment numbers. The basis for this was the Summary of Finances report which suddenly showed a dip in numbers in the beginning of September.

It was such an honor to speak at @accessrrisd.bsky.social’s Novel Gala last night. It’s an incredible organization that has done a great job keeping extremists off of RRISD’s school board. Support them if you can!

I had such a great time I forgot to take pictures, but here are the remarks I gave.
Text of 1st half of speech, which reads: There are so many reasons why I am excited to celebrate Access Education RRISD at tonight’s Novel Gala–so many reasons this event is right up my alley. Besides publishing the Book-Loving Texan’s Guides to School Board Elections, besides being one of the three parents who founded Texas Freedom to Read Project, I’m an English teacher—books are central to what I do. And in all three of those roles, I’ve been thinking a lot about classroom libraries. The first thing I do every year when I get into my classroom is set up my library. It’s the heart of my teaching space—a corner full of shelves stocked with books I’ve curated over years to supplement my instruction, to spark student interest, to—hopefully—create lifelong readers. This year, in the workdays before class started, a group of seniors were on campus helping teachers set up our classrooms. When they got a break, they descended on my room, where they were drawn like magnets to my classroom library—which I had just finished setting up. Can we check books out? They asked. Of course, I said. A few minutes later, one girl asked nervously How many? I looked over: all of them had stacks of books in their hands. Now, I’m not usually possessive of the books in my classroom library, but remember this was before school had even started, and I did want to have at least mostly full shelves on the first of class. I had to tell them to leave a few books for the other kids. In a column this week for the New York Times, Jessica Grose noted that one unexpected benefit of cell phone bans–like the one that was enacted statewide in Texas this year–is that teachers are reporting that kids are reading more books. Anecdotally, I’ve seen that, too: I’m getting more questions about my bookshelves, more requests to check books out. I don’t think this is anything new–kids have always been hungry for what good books can provide them–but I do think we have a great opportunity in Texas righ… 2nd half of speech, which reads: And while I wish I could say it happens all the time with books I’ve assigned in class, in my experience it is much more likely to happen when students have choice in their reading material–when they find themselves in the campus library, or when they’re poring over the shelves of a classroom library. Research backs this up: Last year, researchers Gay Ivey and Peter Johnston published a study into what happened when students in a middle-school English class were provided access to a well-stocked classroom library and time to read books they’d selected from it. According to Ivey and Johnston, “students in the study became more strategic, with a stronger sense of agency in their reading, and were prepared to actively select and engage challenging texts” (104). But beyond that, the young study participants grew as people. Not only did they become more engaged in their schoolwork, they also became in the researchers’ words, “more empathetic, less judgmental, more likely to seek multiple viewpoints, morally stronger, and happier.” But now classroom libraries are disappearing in schools around Texas. Melissa ISD in North Texas banned from its schools reading nooks, classroom libraries, and book bins; students in Princeton ISD walked into classrooms with empty shelves; after outrage from parents and teachers, the board approved a limited list of “supplemental” texts for classroom use. That list only included 50 high school-level books, and students still aren’t allowed to check any out or take them home. In one sense, this is a predictable result of Senate Bill 13, which passed in the last legislative session and was signed by Governor Abbott over the summer. But in another sense, it shows why the work of Access Education RRISD is so important: SB13 does not require the closure of classroom libraries; it does not prevent districts from protecting teachers or supporting them while maintaining compliance with the law. We all want our children to be safe going to school, and so it is vital that we collaborate on solutions and keep the lines of communication open.

Many families in our community are being told their children will lose bus service next year and may be expected to walk up to two miles to school. In areas without sidewalks, lighting, or safe crossings, that simply isn’t realistic or safe. In addition to working closely with the City’s Safe Routes to School Program, my office is reaching out to our partners at the county and school district level to identify ways we can meet the needs of families and improve pedestrian safety in D6. We all want our children to be safe going to school, and so it is vital that we collaborate on solutions and keep the lines of communication open.

We know how vital this will be for RRISD after the lack of any meaningful funding coming from the 88th txlege
