This 1599 portrait, the oldest signed & dated painting in the Americas, depicts Don Francisco de Arobe & his sons who ruled an independent Maroon settlement of self liberated Africans in Ecuador. Like many maroon settlements, the colonial government ultimately recognized it as an autonomous town.

I wish more Europeanists would actually engage with critical race theory and Black Studies. For some scholars, there is a general misunderstanding about terms such as colorism, internalized racism, etc. They need a more nuanced understanding of race. Le sigh.*
