A man allegedly yelled racial slurs and made threatening remarks toward a family shopping at a Halifax Costco before assaulting another customer, according to police. The incident occurred on July 4 around 1 p.m. at the Bayers Lake Costco and was captured on video, which has circulated widely on social media. The footage shows the man confronting women in hijabs, using Islamophobic language, and physically attacking someone recording the incident. Halifax Regional Police confirmed hate is believed to be a motivating factor in the attack. The hate crime unit is investigating, and authorities are urging anyone with information about the suspect or victims to contact police. Community leaders condemned the act, emphasizing that such harassment is unacceptable. The National Council of Canadian Muslims expressed deep concern over the targeting of Muslim women, while local imams called for unity and understanding. Federal Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab also denounced the incident, stressing community solidarity against hate. Police emphasized that all incidents motivated by hate are taken seriously, regardless of criminal outcomes.
