"Whiteness" is a political category almost entirely categorised by the absence of racialisation, which in and of itself is an outgrowth of white supremacy.

As Potter explains here, the ambiguity of Heathcliff's identity feeds into contemporary constructions of the Roma as unknowable, mysterious or uncanny. 12/

The racialisation of the working class has always been core to reactionary politics

E.g. mainstream elites were quick to blame/praise the white WC for both Trump & Brexit despite data providing a different picture

@aaronwinter.bsky.social and I explored it here

Whiteness, populism and the racialisation of the working class in the United Kingdom and the United States
The election of Donald Trump and the Brexit vote were widely hailed as examples of (white) working class revolts. This article examines the populist racialisation of the working class as white and ...

One casualty of the racialisation of class: people fail to recognise that most Bangladeshi and Pakistani people in Britain are working class

That they have the highest rates of poverty

And that historically economic and related factors have been the key driver of their voting behavior

They are closely related because historically, racialised groups have been disproportionally subject to eugenics policies. These policies also (and in some countries, mostly) targeted people by socioeconomic factors - which of course is closely tied to racialisation.

Tricksy oriental vibes, honestly, while denying the racialisation at the same time. Really similar to how Gender Conservatives do misogyny to us while calling us men.

While Heathcliff's racial identity is ambiguous in Wuthering Heights, the book draws on stereotypes and negative conceptions of the Romani in his depiction and the way he's treated. Madeline Potter also suggests that the ambiguity is itself a form of Romani racialisation 11/

Hi new followers! You’ll be disappointed if you’re only looking for hot takes. I post about decolonial theorisation, postcolonial literatures, queer studies & racialisation politics. Speak my mind on India, UK, France, Aus -origin/fam/residence. Plus US.
And, reads, food, plants & scarves.

2/3 1. It suggests that white people are being unfairly victimised whenever trans-Atlantic slavery is discussed. 2. It deflects from the explicit racialisation of European, commercialised slavery (only black people were enslaved) …

in addition to this type of performative white guilt being extremely Exhausting, this flat understanding of neurodivergence elides the significant extent to which neurodivergence and racialisation are mutually constitutive and non-separable
How... would this possibly decrease racism in any way? In what way does this advance racial justice.

Through both fascist racialisation and neoliberal "progressive" multiculturalism, the border inscribes some populations as exploitable and others as expendable

Même au sein des fascismes et parafascismes il y a un gradient dans la racialisation et le culte du sang pur. (je pense aux portugais et à leur justification bidon du colonialisme par le métissage par exemple).
Retailleau parle comme la couche la plus raciste de la boutique.

I think @stephenkb.bsky.social is right there is quite a bit of lazy failure to think things through, as well as some deliberate erosion of boundaries, and some radicalisation by the very online ecosystem in this new Tory re-racialisation of who is truly British

As a tangent, this white/not-white binary is the big problem scholars and activists have had to push past in trying to understand racialisation of and in the Balkans more deeply - which is so bound up with racialisation of Roma…
