Mum Club is a critically acclaimed theatre production that confronts systemic racism and sexism faced by Aboriginal mothers in Australia. The play follows Sadie, a young Martu woman navigating the complexities of new motherhood in Sydney's Inner West. Her experiences highlight the isolation and challenges of Balak motherhood, including cultural disconnect, healthcare disparities, and racial discrimination. The narrative critiques white feminism's invisibility of race, as seen through the interactions with white-dominated mum clubs that perpetuate microaggressions. Key themes include the intersectionality of racism and sexism, the importance of Aboriginal sisterhood, and the sanitization of motherhood in mainstream discourse. The production's satirical tone underscores real-world issues, such as the hostile medical system for Indigenous women and the performative 'inclusion' of white feminism. Through powerful performances and immersive set design, Mum Club offers a vital examination of cultural identity and resilience within Australia's colonial context.
