On 31 August 1936 Elizabeth Cowell became the first female BBC TV announcer. This was before the official launch of the television service on 2 November, when the BBC made test transmissions for the RadiOlympia exhibition.

At one of the Radiolympia shows in the 1930s (a sort of motor show for wireless sets held at Olympia in London) Ferguson had a slogan over their stand: "See Ferguson First." Murphy, who rightly claimed to make better sets, topped it with "See Murphy Last!"
