Three lakh trees in Jharkhand to get 'rakhis' under forest conservation drive
RANCHI: Jharkhand Forest Department has launched a unique initiative for the conservation of forests, under which 'rakhi' will be tied to three lakh trees in selected villages across 24 districts in the state. According to Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Sanjeev Kumar, the initiative is a part of the 'Save Trees' campaign, which will run for a month. Kumar inaugurated the campaign on Friday by tying a ‘rakhi’ to a tree in Jorag village of Gumla. The initiative was conceived by Sanjeev Kumar in 2004 in Lukaiya village under Dhanbad's Tundi block, an area once affected by Maoist insurgency. Since then, more than 12,000 villages across the state have been linked to this programme. Kumar also informed that over 20,000 Mahua trees were saved in Lukaiya village through this initiative and that these trees now contribute significantly to the villagers' livelihoods. The campaign has also assisted numerous villages in cultivating minor forest produce, thereby boosting the villagers' income, he said. Kumar further said that the initiative has played a significant role in expanding Jharkhand’s forest cover. Citing the Forest Survey of India (FSI), he noted that the state’s forest cover has been witnessing a steady increase in recent years...

Jharkhand villagers to tie rakhis to one lakh trees on Raksha Bandhan
Raksha Bandhan is usually about a promise between brothers and sisters. In Jharkhand, that promise is being extended to something much bigger, the trees people depend on for their lives and livelihoods. On Friday, thousands of villagers across around 700 villages will tie rakhis to nearly one lakh trees as part of a month-long 'Save Tree' campaign. The initiative, launched by Principal Chief Conservator of Forest Sanjiv Kumar, aims to cover three lakh trees across all 24 districts. The idea is simple: by tying a rakhi to a tree, people take a pledge to protect it. But the campaign has a history going back more than two decades and is also linked to forest protection, water conservation and rural livelihoods. FROM ONE VILLAGE TO 12,000 VILLAGES The campaign was the brainchild of Sanjiv Kumar and began in 2004 in Lukaiya, a village in Dhanbad district that was once affected by Maoist activity. The initiative has since expanded across Jharkhand, with more than 12,000 villages linked to the programme, according to Kumar. One of its early successes was in Lukaiya, where more than 20,000 Mahua trees were protected. These trees now contribute to the livelihoods of local villagers. The campaign has...
