Colorado community fights plan to use drones to spray weed killer
Soon, weed-killing chemicals will start falling from the sky over the Red Hill area of Boulder county, Colorado. The wildland is known for its biodiversity, home to hundreds of important species and a concentration of rare environmental resources. It is a key habitat for beloved herds of elk and bighorn sheep, with farms and ranchland lying at its base. But any day now, hundreds of acres of Red Hill are set to become the target for drone spraying of a chemical herbicide that some researchers warn come with concerns. County officials say the plan is an effective and essential move that will wipe out invasive weeds and mitigate the risk of dangerous and costly wildfires that could use the unwanted vegetation as fuel. They tout Boulder county as “ground zero” for research and testing of indaziflam - a relatively new herbicide developed by Bayer, the German chemical and pharmaceutical conglomerate, that has been approved for use across millions of acres of public lands as a tool for preserving native ecosystems. But the drone spray project has prompted an outcry from many people living and working in the area as some scientists say the chemical comes with serious risks for vulnerable...

A rare find in the Clarendon area for buyers wanting a very well-improved and well-maintained ranch property. The topography of the ranch varies from mostly level near the owner’s home and barn, to rolling ranchland with some valleys, plum thickets and tree cover.

Construction begins soon on a new Backcountry Area entrance north of the park’s main entrance. By early 2027, visitors will be able to drive to a 40-vehicle parking lot where they can access 10 miles of existing ranch roads—and eventually new single-track trails.

The project’s👉 new partner is Google.

Now, Google is the owner of the data center👉—the owner of the land, though, is Tallgrass Energy. And on land directly adjacent to the campus, Tallgrass Energy is erecting the Cheyenne Power Hub on 659 acres of former ranchland.
Since that July 2025 announcement, however, “Crusoe Energy has withdrawn from the project,” the Laramie County Board of County Commissioners told residents on July 8, 2026.

Now, as reported by the Substack Measured AI, the project’s name has officially been changed to “Project Tembo.”
To see this going in is tough—👉I don’t get to see the view. I get to see lights. 👉I get to see dust. I get to see buildings.” During a public meeting, other residents expressed worries about the area’s water supply.

Big Bend makes up about a quarter of the U.S.-Mexico border. Border Patrol made just 161 arrests there in August. Yet the administration plans $7.5B in new barriers across the region, including private ranchland. Border security matters. So does asking whether every mile of wall is worth the cost.

Backyard farming movement takes root in Central Florida
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Every day, the U.S. loses about 2,000 acres of farm and ranchland, mostly due to encroaching urban development. But a growing trend has homeowners taking back some of that land through something called micro-farming. Just after 6 a.m. in Pine Hills, Sharea Harris is already on her hands and knees, pulling radishes from the soil. Her 5-year-old daughter, Jane, isn’t far behind. What started as a pandemic project has grown into something much bigger a small but thriving urban farm, a budding children’s education program and a glimpse into a broader movement quietly spreading across Central Florida backyards. “I just love that,” Harris said, describing the joy she finds in watching her daughter engage with the garden. “Just that spark that we all once had as kids, that everything was exciting and new and fun and adventurous — I feel the same way when I’m out here.” Harris began gardening in 2020, when she and her family moved to their Pine Hills home. With two young kids and a pandemic-era mandate to stay home, she decided to put her backyard to work. “We started really small with one of those garden beds over there, and it’s...

...Texas has continued sprawling and chewing up empty ranchland to build cheap, egalitarian-ish 'burbs.

Of course they had to generate a bajillion tons of extra CO2 in the process, but I think they beat us on the racial integration scoreboard.
