One of my personal hc's about the thieves' guild in skyrim is that there didn't used to be an entrance in the cemetery. Somebody wanted to join and said "the ratway? That's for noobs" and then blew a hole approximately where they figured the cistern was. Skipped the ragged flagon and all.

I was worried I'd have to keep them apart, but despite being part of an anti-dragon cult, Esbern seemed to have no problems with the giant dragon lurking in the sewers
