I love HighPoint so much. So many awesome things. But what a stupid fucking product. Hot and expensive and inefficient, but basically all compensating for lack of PCIe bifurcation.
That said hopefully we see some more redrivers on bifurcators. That would do 99%.

I really hope we get better at redrivers / retimers. Especially ones for cables.
Ideally I also want multipole switching. 3:1 please! Kinda sucks because it sort of has to be bidirectional switching I think perhaps? But man I want more reconfigurable ports.

Gen 6 at 64 GT/s will force retimers deeper into the channel; redrivers simply won't cut it for the loss budgets on those 200+ GB/s links.

This is my understanding. Don't quote me on this. I don't even know if these cards actually have redrivers. i assumed they do and i wont find out if they work until i actually put everything together.

The reason is that PCIe 5.0 is super fast, and because it's super fast, any small defects in the cable can cause single integrity losses and knock the connection down to PCIe 4.0. This is needed because it has redrivers, which, as far as I understand, are like amplifiers that boost the PCIe signal.

also, i'm considering to deploy redrivers, but not sure which location would be strategically the best. in front of the connectors on the motherboard (kind of mid way between host and device), or on the "satellite" boards, i.e. closer to usb devices. i guess i lack the gazillion dollar equipment […]
