Why do lower-resolution images sometimes yield better results in deep learning for bioimaging analyses? 🤔📉

Mariana Ferreira's new preprint on #ReScale4DL explores this paradox and introduces optimal resolution design! @gomez-mariscal.bsky.social brainchild🧑‍🔬✨

🤹 How can you now use this new knowledge?
Together with the ReScale4DL user-friendly framework, we provide systematic guidelines for selecting an image resolution that balances accuracy, throughput, and cost.

🙏 I'm incredibly thankful to the brave Mariana G Ferreira, who took the challenge, with lots of patience, of making #ReScale4DL real, as well as the great Bruno Saraiva, Antonio Brito and Mariana Pinho for helping us put all the pieces together.

#ReScale4DL is very close to my🫀It's among the 1st ideas shaped with @richardbranson.bsky.social in my early days in his lab, which became a unique opportunity for me to link mathematical concepts to experimental imaging. It also turned out to be my last postdoc story and the 1st publication as PI🤩

ReScale4DL: Balancing Pixel and Contextual Information for Enhanced Bioimage Segmentation [new]
Lower res bioimages boost DL seg, balancing detail & context for better efficiency.

In #ReScale4DL optimisation, we show that high resolution (low pixel-size) can lead to suboptimal DL performance🧐 (surprised?)
Good news: downsampling images, or going to lower resolutions in acquisition, is so easy (and cheaper!) and can indeed improve imaging throughput, yay!!!😉
