I was completely surprised (and flattered) to have gotten this nod (as Best Local Author) in an Ithaca Times reader's poll. 📚🦷🧪 🦇📰

I wrote about PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE for my reader's choice series. In this piece, I looked at the film through the lens of doom-laden 70s pictures, and how it fits in alongside others like CABARET.

I was expecting to be spending this evening chasing a suspected serial killer through a long forgotten Mithraic temple beneath Aldgate to prevent them from completing a ritual so dark that to even mention its name would destroy the reader's sanity.

But instead I'm having hot buttered toast.

Oops.

She ended up falling asleep with her head in ( READER'S ) lap.

What’s weird is that watered down versions of reader response theory (mostly Tumblr culture) reigned supreme on pre-Elon ex-Twitter. So much so that the reader’s subjective experience was always prioritized. (This happens all the time on Tumblr) Now that’s mostly gone.
Reader-response theory is.....a foreign concept to many here

This is a key idea in literary analysis: meaning does not exist within text. Meaning is a process that happens when a reader encounters text. Therefore, meaning will always proceed from a reader’s perspective first. The author is “dead” on the page. The text, though, lives through meaning.
