During a recrystallization of the pain-killer combo of Percocet (acetaminophen and oxycodone) and acetaminophen on a microscope slide, this ghost horse revealed itself, just in time for Halloween. No need to worry, though. It's the size of fruit fly.

I briefly toyed with image/text generators when they came out and never really felt that way? It always felt to me that the machine had made it. No more so then thinking a chemical I made at work was 'mine'.

Maybe if my job was recrystallization I'd feel differently.

Another dancing figure from my recent recrystallization of the taurine/glycine/urea trio of chemicals. This dancer is wearing a "fabric" with molecular layers that trick incoming light into beaming back out with this splash of chromatic vibrance. This dancer would fit in small drop of water.

Bleeding Edge. Another photomicrograph from my recent recrystallization experiments with the combo of alanine, a building block of our proteins, and urea, a molecular waste product from cellular metabolism that finds its way out of us via urine. The scene here would fit inside a Cheerio hole.

That 60° or 90° cruciform twinning in staurolite is a genuinely rare natural geometry — iron and aluminum silicate locking into that cross during metamorphic recrystallization. The shimmer you're seeing is likely from included ilmenite platelets. Beautiful specimen!

The fridge’s cold air speeds up the recrystallization of starches in your bread, making it go stale much faster.

However, freezing sliced bread not only preserves it longer than the refrigerator without going stale, it also lowers the bread’s glycemic index!

The impact of freezing and toasting on the glycaemic response of white bread - PubMed
All three procedures investigated, freezing and defrosting, toasting from fresh, and toasting following freezing and defrosting, favourably altered the glucose response of the breads. This is the first study known to the authors to show reductions in glycaemic response as a result of changes in stor …

Nacre (mother of pearl) isn't very stable chemically, so fossils with nacre are less common, because they dissolve during the millions of years exposed to heat, pressure and fluids in the earth's crust. But in the right conditions, we can find pearl fossils […]

I think, at this point, we've established that the Dolomite Problem doesn't really exist; it's just an issue of triggers and timescales. Studies like this really hammer that message: proto-dolomite at surface, matures at depth. 🧪⚒️

I personally think this paper, with its concept for a three-stage model of dolomitization, is interesting. But I have no idea how to spin it to make it clear to everyone why that's interesting without a deep dive... so... 1/6🧵
