While it was not THE Hole In The Road, there was indeed a hole in the road near Redgates, and in the middle of it was the infamous footbridge over Arundel Gate.

Thanks for the memory! The annual visit to Redgates toyshop on The Moor was a magical part of the run-up to Christmas for any child living around Sheffield!

I agree. Closest big city to Bakewell, so we used to do lots of shopping trips. My mum liked shopping at Cole Brothers. And in the 70s, Redgates was the best toy shop in the north of England.

I think you're mis-remembering a bit. Redgates was at the top of The Moor, on Furnival Gate. The Hole in the Road was about half a mile away by foot, where Arundel Gate meets High Street and Angel Street.

It was indeed wonderful. Far from that now, though! It was empty and almost derelict the last time I was there. I presume that the staircase is still as it was! My three favourite shops: Snig Hill Coop, Suggs, and Redgates! Oh and Andrew’s stationers at the back of City Hall!

I met them at Redgates toy shop in Sheffield in 1974.
It's not as good as when I met The Wurzels in Newtown, Powys.
They bought me a cheese and onion sandwich and a bitter lemon in the Elephant and Castle pub.

Andrews yeah, Mum took me there, down the stairs into an emporium. The smell of the pencils is still with me notwithstanding my wife draws & paints so I still get it. Redgates, I'm sure my Dad had a sadistic streak in him like 'Here's what you could have for Christmas if we could afford it!'
