They also had a 1:1000 redenomination in 1998

One of the fastest growing economies in the world which split from the currency union with the South African Rand in the 70s. The currency introduction was a currency exchange not a redenomination and one of the inspirations for the SCG currency plan.

bulletin of atomic scientists (not actually atomic scientists) need to do a redenomination on this thing. this out of control inflation is making it hard to take *any* doomsday clocks seriously.
Atomic scientists moved their 'Doomsday Clock' closer to midnight than ever before, citing Russian nuclear threats amid its invasion of Ukraine, tensions in other world hot spots, military applications of AI and climate change as factors underlying the risks of global catastrophe reut.rs/3WAqxqR

Redenomination alters nothing real. It nevertheless makes a big difference
One weird trick to solve the affordability crisis
If voters dislike big numbers, there is a purely nominal fix

(context: they were literally the same thing! everyone had been using "thousands" as a term for the currency itself at that point. and the redenomination was "knock off those 0s")

i've been beating the redenomination drum for a while (which this basically is) and i think it actually takes a lot of wind out of the "everything is so expensive, when I was your age gas used to cost 69cents" or whatever. people like number smol, even if their purchasing power is the same
free hot take: don't get rid of the penny, just multiply the face value of every coin by 10 (and swap the dime and nickel)
This is incredible from @tracyalloway.bsky.social on how the government could lose even more money by discontinuing the penny if it results in a "flight to nickels" www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...

I.... what...?

When you do a redenomination, you have you reissue entirely new physical currency.

I wrote what I assume to be a terrible paper on redenomination via decimalhop in college so there are Dozens Of Us, Probably

Perfect, by then the inflation driven redenomination will have happened so they’ll be able to say “Starting under 25k New Dollars”

(in case it wasn't clear, my proposal is to shift the coin vs paper split *instead of* doing Sky's 10:1 redenomination)
i genuinely believe that it's not about the actual numbers but about the anchoring effect of where the coins vs paper bills split occurs

like, even if people aren't using hard currency as often these days, we still *know* that pennies, nickels, and dimes exist

Wait, I think the actual earliest was the plan to deorbit Mir in '99. I remember thinking, what a waste of cool space stuff because I didn't know it was basically on fire all the time.

There was also the 1998 ruble redenomination but I don't think I learned about it from the news.

As i like to keep reminding people, Im so old I remember the shift from people trading DEM-PLN through the legs to trading USD-PLN through the legs within about 5 years, effectively signaling a redenomination of a good chunk of a regional asset & liability structure. So I’ve seen it happen.

If we get up to half dollars as the smallest denomination, with redenomination that means the smallest amount of anything you can buy is five bucks worth. Seems a bit much. Trying to fit money to income is a little tricky if it neglects the worth of products.

About the cheapest worthwhile thing I can buy is 19 cent tootsie rolls (the long skinny ones) at the gas station. A simple "drop a zero" redenomination gets me a two-cent tootsie roll. Making quarters effectively pennies gets me a one-cent tootsie roll with a 30% premium. Still tolerable. Past that?

[Second] redenomination when?
November 14, 2024 at 12:44 PM
Because my parents moved from Poland to the UK just before the redenomination of the Polish zloty and *then moved back years later* they did currency exchange out loud for years after everyone else had forgot. „100? That’s… 10000, sure that sounds fine”
one of my sort of recurring Themes that I care about in history is: when we change the name of a place (a room, a street, a house, a website) is how long people do the "Gamma, formerly known as Delta" thing. it varies a lot and is really interesting to me
It's quite funny that my institution has decided to renumber all its rooms lately, but doesn't give out a nice concordance upon doing so. So if you've written down an old-style room number, it's basically impossible to work out what that would be now.

My craziest truly held policy is redenomination.

I believe if we knocked a zero off the dollar, people would be filled with such joy that they would re-elect the responsible party for half a century.

Eggs for 35¢
My mortgage of $150
Visa debt $600

I mean... administration is still young and I expect stimulus checks, price controls, maybe even redenomination to be the solutions offered before "end the trade war."

10 shillings overmarked 60 piastres for use at Gallipoli 1915-16.

10,000 pesos overmarked 10 Australs, for the 1985 Argentine redenomination. The Austral only lasted 6 years.

1000 Lire overwritten Lazio Campione d'Italia 1999-2000

50 US dollars overmarked Lesbian Money, context and date unknown

And honestly, the HWTP redenomination is more useful than "adjustment for inflation" for price comparisons between years. It doesn't get done because they're afraid of how pissed people would get when they see the trend (going up faster than official inflation figures).
