Día de muertos is the syncretization between Middle Age European days of remembering the dead with Mesoamerican death rememberance traditions. They selected Nov 2 to avoid overlap with other Catholic festivals. The Catrina was a political cartoon drawn in the 1800s for a local newspaper.
