In the article Rendeavour describes the project as the opposite of resource extraction - instead "we are literally adding to it". Historically, investors of new cities in Africa (DRC specifically) do not fund power, water, roads, and internet without imposing their market or extracting resources.

While there are currently only about 5000 residents, Rendeavour, the city's developer, hopes to attract 250,000 people once the project is completed. The project has also been endorsed by the Charter Cities Institute based out of Washington DC who see Tatu City as a model for new city building.
