Renderware: one of those game engine logos you'd often see in early 2000s games intros, especially for the PS2 where it was a boon to those struggling with how that console did things with graphics.

At its peak in 2003, Renderware claimed they held 70% of the market for external middleware.

Grand Theft Auto III, VC, and San Andreas are all RenderWare games and where a lot of peeps will have seen the logo.

I always used to wonder what exactly it was when I'd see it.

Renderware did seem to be everywhere and then quickly vanished in 2004 as EA bought Criterion (devs of Burnout) and folded the tech into their own internal engines.

I ditched unity terrains and sculpted meshes, to go full old-school.
Now the entire basemap is hand modeled face-by-face, exactly like RenderWare era GTA:Vice City and Manhunt.

Say it with me class:

👏RENDERWARE👏IS👏NOT👏A👏GAME👏ENGINE👏

The clue is in the name! RENDERing softWARE. It's a graphics middleware. It helps you draw the pretty pictures. No physics, no gameplay, nothing else!

(Sorry it's annoying whenever people get this wrong)

The missions were designed to suit the story. Previously it had been the other way around.

The ps3 was difficult to work with so the 360 became the lead platform.

R*San Diego produced their Rage engine to replace the discontinued RenderWare engine.
