it's a little disheartening seeing how story-centric games struggle to gain footing in a market hyper-focused on high replayability

I think weapon degradation is a shit mechanic, but the same oldheads put that shit in anyway. Let people kiss the characters, it adds an additional replayability factor!!

If the game is shit, "replayability" is actually kind of a downside.

I actually like gacha/booster pack mechanics. I'm a Xenoblade 2 gacha defender it adds a fun level of replayability when it's not tied to real money

Remember when replayability was factored into a game’s score but no one actually replayed the game for that so it was just on vibes. 😀

Tracing the origin of this is fascinating.

- 00s/10s exec panic about Gamestop used-games sales
- exec mandates for replayability, DLC schedules, and/or subscriptions
- slow morph into Season Passes/live service

15 years later, "replayability" means Fortnite-like "play all the time forever".
The idea that story-driven games aren’t replayable is so strange to me. I eventually bounce off every multiplayer game because I get bored, but I go back to story games again and again just like rewatching a favorite movie, or to experience something new

And the replayability with mods is awesome too!
For a game made in 2018 by a relatively small team in Unity, Battletech by Harebrained Schemes looks like concept art at times. Really strong art direction and technical execution
