Open science starts before publication: document decisions, share reusable code and explain how results were produced.

Protect sensitive data and make access conditions clear.

Openness helps others inspect and build on research.

My capstone proposal got a plagiarism warning because my literature review matrix lacked citations. I stopped copy‑pasting and built a simple Excel sheet: Author, Year, Title, DOI, APA in‑text format—now Turnitin passes. #apastyle #ResearchSkills

FAIR = Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable.

Give research data persistent identifiers, clear metadata, shared standards and explicit reuse conditions.

Sensitive data can remain controlled-access and still be FAIR.

Skip the rubric guesswork: a Chapter 2 lit‑review needs a citation matrix, not a paragraph dump. List each source, its theoretical contribution, and the exact page you’ll cite—then the APA 7th in‑text (Author, Year, p.#) falls into place. #apastyle #ResearchSkills

Midterm night, a friend panicked: “How do I cite my professor’s recommendation letter?” In APA 7, treat it as personal communication—only an in‑text citation (Prof. Lee, personal communication, 12 Oct 2026). No entry in the reference list. #ResearchSkills

“Analysed in R” leaves too much unanswered.

Report sample selection, preprocessing, software versions, models and thresholds. Link the code.

Detailed methods help readers assess your claims and reproduce your analysis.

At 2 am I realized my PICOT question citation was just a URL in the reference list – Turnitin flagged it as missing a DOI. APA 7 demands (Author, year) in‑text and a DOI after the title; add “https://doi.org/…” and the flag disappears. #apastyle #ResearchSkills

Midterm week and your literature‑review matrix is still a blank spreadsheet—stop staring and copy this: column A = author, B = year, C = key finding, D = APA 7 in‑text (Author, year). Fill rows as you read, then export the table to Zotero for a ready reference list. #ResearchSkills

Turnitin just flagged my mixed‑methods design paragraph—because I quoted the design name without a source. Copy‑paste the standard reference: Creswell, J. W., & Plano Clark, V. L. (2018). *Designing mixed methods research* (2nd ed.). SAGE. https://doi.org/10.4135/9781506335191 #ResearchSkills

Skipped adding DOIs to your literature‑review matrix? By the time you format the reference list, you’ll waste an hour hunting each article. In APA 7th, include the DOI right after the URL (or alone) in the matrix—then copy‑paste. #ResearchSkills

Supplementary files matter.

Include complete results, define columns and thresholds, and check that sample numbers and gene names match the manuscript.

Open the final files before submitting. Readers need to follow the evidence behind your figures.

“Why did you choose this method?”

This question can be difficult, even when the method itself is familiar.

Researchers need to explain not only what they did, but why that choice was reasonable.

Methods are decisions, not just procedures.

Midterm week and your Chapter 2 lit review still missing proper citations? Drag the article’s DOI into Zotero, hit “Create Bibliography” and paste the APA entry—e.g., Doe, J. (2022). Title. Journal, 15(3), 45‑60. doi:10.1234/abc. #APAstyle #ResearchSkills

2 am panic over the delimitations paragraph: you’re supposed to cite the transcript that defines your scope, but the manual says “transcript” without a format. In APA 7, treat it as an unpublished interview: (Interviewee, personal communication, 15 Mar 2024). #APAstyle #ResearchSkills

Skipped the FIU Chapter 2 literature‑review template’s “page numbers” line and spent all night counting front‑matter. Fix: cite the PDF’s label with “p.” and note that Roman‑numeral prelims count as i–x, then start Arabic at 1 for the main text. #MLAstyle #ResearchSkills

Researchers are often taught how to perform experiments.

But they are not always taught how to decide what experiment should come next.

That decision-making process may be one of the most important parts of research training.

Midterm bibliography due Oct 21 and I caught a classmate missing every DOI. In APA 7, append “https://doi.org/” before the suffix and place it at the end of the reference—no period after the URL. Saves half a point per entry. #ResearchSkills #ChicagoStyle
