#RestHome
This was Christmas ‘22 with Tony, taken in his original resthome. Loved and missed but, increasingly, released with love too.

Looks like there’s been a resthome pamper session.

During Covid I used to sit outside Tony’s resthome room and we’d talk through the ranch slider, but he had trouble hearing me. Someone suggested walkie talkies. It made such a difference - he was so happy!

I just found out that the local resthome has a covid outbreak, lots of oldies and staff with it, several residents have died.

Arohanui to their whanau.

A pox on this govt and the last one for not legislating for indoor air or respirator use.

Tony’s brother visited him this morning. He was sleeping deeply, and calm. Unless I hear from the resthome, I’m having a rest ‘n recharge Sunday at home.

Random Tony photo from his first resthome, with Marlow at his feet. The second resthome cat was Marlie, oddly enough.

On the right you can just see the pink flamingo a staff member snuck into his garden overnight for his birthday during Covid.

And of course Tony’s resthome cat, Marlie

I love when the resthome calls and they start with “How are you?” I DON’T KNOW! You tell me how I’m gonna be after you tell me what’s gone wrong with my loved one this time! You tell me!

It’s certainly something to see a headline about a covid outbreak at a resthome and then to read a quote from the resthome talking about how the last of the positive cases are due to leave “the recommended 5 day isolation” when we know 5 days is a bit short to be preventing spread

Tony’s back at the resthome. Got him a cheeseburger. He’s tired & confused: thinks I’m lying about it being where he lives but happy to stay. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Hospice will be in touch tomorrow. Dr thinks septicaemia likely to start within days.
I’m holding on by a very thin thread after a long, hard day.

***(P.S. don't be smug about this ConservaBoomers this is ALSO why/how the GQP is going to happily let your dumbf--- kids warehouse you in the sh---iest resthome imaginable)

Good news from Mum’s resthome - they’ve had not further cases of Covid in the last couple of days (with one person in the wider village in isolation).

There’s Covid in Tony’s resthome again. Reminding him to wash his hands in the bathroom then again when he gets to his room. Keep his door closed & window open a bit. Sigh.

🧵 For the last 6 years I have planned my life around Tony & visiting the resthome.

I visited 6 days a week & phoned every evening until recently, when I switched to an after-work visit.

If I was away I made sure I phoned twice a day unless too remote.

I have to build a whole new routine -

Tony’s confused, even roamed the resthome looking for me despite how frail he is.

2 new black spots on bad foot. We think it’s gangrene starting. Looks like his body isn’t able to fight.

I hope it overwhelms his system quickly bc he’s so very uncomfortable all the time & there’s no other end. 💔

Four hours, three wines, two resthome Christmas functions, one deceased Isabel.

We need an LGBT resthome, But bigots won't allow that.

A wealthy bigot in NZ nearly got a white only one, But it failed.

tomorrow. I’ll wfh at resthome so part of convo. They want to add morphine & add Midazalom now rather than later.

In all this there are some funny moments. Some of the things he says are so muddled and hilarious. So there’s that.

Love remains…

Call from the resthome saying Mum’s slippers are too tight (weird coz she’s had them for ages but 🤷‍♀️). I’d been wondering if there was anything she needed for Christmas.

A local resthome that houses a family member has fairly regular covid outbreaks, plus brutal gastro recently, to such an extent that it's hard to visit safely
May 10, 2025 at 9:49 PM
J popped in to visit his Mum, and was her aircon set to cooling? Of course it wasn’t! Wouldn’t you expect resthome staff to check on that on a 30° day

🧵 Lots of new friends so quick recap of my life so posts make sense.
Tony’s 18yrs older than me. Nursed at home for 2 yrs with Hospice help, for pain relief not palliative. Multiple complex health problems. Into resthome 4 years ago. When doing end of life stuff came out he worried a lot about

Watermelon 🍉 yum. Refreshing juicy delicious sweet after moving furniture from 2 rooms into 1 room for new carpet. We've been dreading our furniture move (as opposed to our parents house clearance in preparation to pay resthome fees).
