restic and borg (not that borg) are two other players in the open source backups scene. borg seems to be favored for industrial use and restic for home use. restic's community and ecosystem seems to be the biggest. I tried restic for a few weeks and found it to also be perfectly fine

• ZFS snapshots every 15 min
• Proxmox Backup Server hourly
• Restic to local ZFS hourly
• Restic to Backblaze B2 daily
Started with Plex, kept going until I didn’t need Google for anything.

It makes nice encrypted incremental backups and is open source. But it’s just a CLI tool. So you need a scheduler. To do that you can use a docker container with backrest:

I use Backrest for my backups, which is a front end for restic. The restic retention policy can be a bit confusing. I hadn't realized the default is to keep 24 hourly backups, which meant there were 18 extra snapshots on pretty big backups that I don't really need to maintain 7D/1W/1M/1Y.

I use Backrest for my backups, which is a front end for restic. The restic retention policy can be a bit confusing. I hadn't realized the default is to keep 24 hourly backups, which meant there were 18 extra snapshots on pretty big backups that I don't really need to maintain 7D/1W/1M/1Y.
On top of my Syncthing mention earlier, this is a very promising self-hosted tool for more cold-storage cloud backups.

My backup strategy is restic to rsync.net hourly/daily/weekly depending on the system, retaining a bunch of snapshots
Once a month, I manually run a script that fetches the latest backups from rsync.net to a portable disk, imports database dumps to a fresh mariadbd and runs some stored queries

Have at least THREE copies of your data: the live one on your computer, and at least two backups.
Use at least TWO different storage media, eg, your computer's drive and another drive. Ideally you'd use different *types* -- hard drive, network storage drive, tape/optical.

Trotzdem einen Cloud Tipp für Linux und Mac User (man sollte Ahnung von SSH etc. haben), ist www.borgbase.com.

Finally getting around to running backups again on a regular basis.
Used to use Veeam NFR prior to forming the business proper, but now that I've gone pro, I'd rather reduce the corner cutting.
Using a tool called "Backrest" that uses Restic to automate backups!
