#Retief
The South African President brought White golfers with him to try to prove there’s no systemic persecution of Whites in South Africa.

Golfer Retief Goosen then tells Trump that his dads farmer friends have been killed and farms are constantly being burned.

Adam Scott is the next generation of Bernhard Langer, he just keeps playing

Also Keith Laumer, whose books were either MilSF or Retief, which featured a gun-shooting blowing-shit-up diplomat (!) surrounded by hot women who wanted to fuck him and feckless colleagues who wanted to kowtow to the evil empire opposing him. James Bond in SF drag, really.

In a Keith Laumer Retief story, sending a goober like Trump to greet Xi at his arrival would be a deft diplomatic insult.

Problem is said timorous goober is our president, and the POTUS reduced to flunkie status waving "bye-bye" as Xi's limo speeds away is yet another humiliation for us.

If I as a golfer my name would be Retief Goosen.

Loved Harrison. Read SF like mad - all of the golden & silver age authors. Laumer's Retief diplomacy farces, all of Harlan Ellison (met him several times at conventions. Asimov, too), Saberhagen, Simak, Clarke, Anderson, Silverberg, LeGuin, PK Dick (his papers are at the CSF library in Fullerton) ♾️

(I personally like #5 and #6 better because while the first four were in some sense channeling Heinlein, those two are channeling Keith Laumer's RETIEF, and i *adore* Retief.)

$12.50 well spent at the used book store today. @crutledge.bsky.social recommended Virginia Coffman so I specifically went looking for her on the "Gothics" shelf there. The High Crusade and The Fallible Fiend I'd heard of but not read, and I've really enjoyed Laumer's Retief stories

Due to reasons we have not gotten in a Classic @TravellerRPG game in a couple of weeks, but I have managed to get some reading done. Finishing the Stainless Steel Rat Sings the Blues tonight. Also read the first Retief collection, Envoy to New Worlds.

As a kid? The Polesotechnic League stories by Poul Anderson as a SF game setting or the Retief series by Keith Laumer, probably.
Okay. You have unfortunately been hit with the curse that makes you adapt a work you liked as a kid into a ttrpg.

What thing are you adapting?

Retief Goosen final round of the US Open in 2004 is one of the greatest rounds of golf in the history of the world. I watched some last night, the course is gone and his putter never fails.

Good on ya, then, I spent many happy hours reading Retief novels, HHGttG, etc. SF worlds are ripe with humorous possibility.

Thanks for reminding me about Keith Laumer. I had forgotten him... as a kid, I loved Retief... I bet I would still. Have to check my library, I lost most of my kids books in 1986, but might have some still. If niot, my mother probably does. If not mom, then I might break down and buy a set.

Looking at this list though, a couple of thoughts:

What about the Retief books by Laumer?
BTW, I liked Scalzi's second book, The Android's Dream, in part because of Scalzi's brand of humor. If you've read the first chapter, you know what I mean. 😘
