Calling optics experts! The "Heiligenschein" is where light focussed by a waterdrop retroreflects from e.g. leaves/grass & creates a halo around an observer's shadow. But an experiment using a smooth reflective surface shows dispersion! Anyone seen this? Details in ALT text @johncnaylor.bsky.social
Experiments showing retroreflection in a glass sphere where the reflective surface is positioned with its rough side near the focus (left) and the smooth side near the focus (right). The direction of incident light is from the top. The retro-reflected light is the bright circle you can see around the hole through which the incident light illuminates the glass sphere. In the case when reflection is from the smooth side, we see dispersion of the retroreflection. The colour order is the same as the primary rainbow which can also be seen.
