Fact is that today's unions, by and large, don't *really* know struggle. Especially the trades.

It has been generations since beatings, bullets, blood and bodybags.

Long gone are the days of Martin Luther King Jr. and Walter Reuther.

So long-term strategy is abstract, if considered at all.
The Teamsters are purportedly purposed with defending the material interests of its members. It might do that in the narrow context of contract negotiations, but big picture the best way to do this is to elect Democrats. But members voted 60% for Trump. There's something broken here!

Moreover, whenever union leaders did try to press on racial equality, such as the United Auto Workers’ Walter Reuther, local workers would push back very hard and even vote for Republicans who hated their unions.

This needs to be made into a supercut starting with him and adding in Warren, AOC, squad, the Tuesday sweep patriots.

Maybe start with the predecessors from progressive and labor movements, TR, FDR, Reuther, etc.

Dolores Huerta’s determination and courage helped ignite the farmworker movement and inspired generations of organizers. The UAW honors her clear-eyed commitment to justice and dignity for all workers.

In the bottom row, second from the right, is Martin Luther King; to his left is Asa Philip Randolph. On the right in the top row is Walter Reuther (of the United Auto Workers labor union). On that occasion, King delivered his historic 'I Have a Dream' speech at the Lincoln Memorial.

What I did before:
I studied Molecular Medicine at the University of Freiburg. For my Bachelor’s thesis, I joined the lab of Dr. Peter Reuther, where I worked on establishing a CRISPR/Cas9 knockout assay to identify host factors involved in non-lytic viral infections.

@bowiesongs.bsky.social just reading your piece on Dum Dum Days, hit the line about the Tatars, I gotta mention that Wayne State University's sports mascot (from 1927 to 1999) was "The Tartar." Any kid growing up in Ann Arbor would have heard that name, and probably asked "what's a Tartar?"

At a Ford plant:

"Acres of machines. A worker at a switchboard watches lights blink in a machine.

A manager gleefully says 'How will you collect union dues from these machines?'

I say 'That's not what bothers me. The problem is how to sell cars to these machines.'"

- W. Reuther, 1956
