A study does not account for an important confounder, but the data may allow reanalysis.

Would you recommend major revision, rejection, or ask the editor for specialist input?

What would make the difference for you?

Has an editor ever given you feedback that genuinely improved the way you review manuscripts?

What did they point out, and why was it useful?

A useful check when reviewing causal claims:

• Does the study design support causation?
• Have plausible alternative explanations been considered?
• Does the conclusion reflect the uncertainty in the evidence?

Association alone does not establish causation.

Before submitting your #peerreview, take two minutes to:

✅ Put the most important concern first.
✅ Remove wording you cannot support with evidence.
✅ Make sure your recommendation matches your report.
✅ Check that confidential comments do not contradict what the author sees.

Before you submit a #peerreview, a quick final check can help:

• Are the major concerns prioritized?
• Is the language evidence-based?
• Does the recommendation match the report?
• Are confidential comments consistent with what you’ve written?

Novelty can be tricky to judge because “new to me” is not the same as “new to the field.”

A better check is whether the manuscript adds something meaningful to the relevant literature, and whether that contribution is clearly supported.
