#Ricefish
That's awesome!!! They are really calming to watch 🦐 Cherries are so pretty, I've had to stop myself from getting another tank several times to have a shrimp only tank. I started 2 years ago and I keep the blue dreams with some ricefish. I will post the baby shrimps if I manage to spot them!!

Ricefish are in their minipond!

I also now sell plants and ricefish back to my local fish store! No real profit, but at least the hobby mostly pays for itself through that.

King Yama medaka ricefish playing in a sunbeam
September 3, 2026 at 3:31 PM
It turns out that with video I can see all three kinds of ricefish here.
The solid orange are King Yama. They will continue to get a darker orange color.
The orange and white I plan to call Dreamcicle Pearl Galaxy and keep trying to improve them.
And there is a rare Ice White still present.

Most fish lay their eggs, but some carry them around. Females of the Sulawesi ricefish Oryzias eversi keep their eggs attached to their body until they hatch. Researchers reveal the specialised anatomy that makes this unusual form of parental care possible. #LIBresearch

@phrost.bsky.social the local shop has the shrimp and the ricefish. Gonna get a small school and let them settle into the tank with some plants. Then I might get a beta later on

when i woke up my little ricefish was swimming against the glass in my direction......hes like a dog

Unfortunately outside the tadpoles are too and they seem to make them grow a little slower.
I am wondering if I have any boys in the orange ricefish.

Just a few of the baby Pearl Galaxy Ricefish. I have 8 buckets that are still too small to go in here. All the sawdust is from mosquito dunks.
For some reason I don’t have any orange ones yet at all.

Cichlids are beautiful but I wanted peaceful and room temperature so I got ricefish… then neocaradina… then Otocinclus… and most recently corydoras. Plus infected with snails.
Hopefully algae under control and Cyanobacteria will never return.

I have ricefish and neocaradina shrimp. With both, shrimp more than fish, there are a very few standard names other than those the breeders seem to name them whatever they think will bring the best price.

I put my first set of baby ricefish outside for the summer. I wish the camera picked up their eyes glowing blue in the daylight not filtered by glass.
May 11, 2026 at 8:38 PM
There are a number of types of fish reported to recognize their owners and interact with them. Betas and Oscars come to mind.

The absolute toughness of the ricefish in such small bodies blows me away. The Pearl Galaxy ones are outside for the summer already and are fine despite the temperature 40F.

Three day old baby ricefish getting pretty good at swimming and at the end hours old ricefish that is mostly resting from 3 days of work getting out of its egg. All at 3x magnification.

Otocinclus catfish size comparison with medaka ricefish
April 6, 2026 at 10:01 PM
For anyone interested in the small world occupying me since Hemi died. I have just added Otocinclus catfish to help me with algae growing on the plants. The adults are so tiny that they make the ricefish look like giants.

No, many differences and I have heard that mosquito fish will either eat ricefish or torment them to death.
Mosquito fish are live bearers like guppies. And I think they live all through the water column. And they haven’t been changed from the wild form.
Ricefish have been raised as ornamental
