ARK has riverfly monitoring sites across the Kennet and Pang catchments.
Always exciting when a brook lamprey is in the sample.

Spent yesterday learning to ID invertebrates in 2 local chalk streams using the Riverfly field guide to supplement the chemical water quality monitoring we've been doing. Each stream had a good variety of critters, each with different groups prevalent, and were in good health.

Riverfly monitors do such crucial work - thank you for protecting our trout and salmon at this sensitive time of year! 🐟👏

One of the joys of riverfly monitoring is our volunteers get to know their site through the seasons, this image is the Foudry Brook as autumn begins
Thanks to our Foudry Brook volunteer riverfly monitor for sharing.

Being a citizen scientist this month means potentially skipping a survey🐟

Some Riverfly groups take a pause now but if you are still out sampling, watch your step. It's spawning season.

📢 Spotted a Redd? Don't step in! Take a 📷 & alert your coordinator immediately.

It was a lovely morning for our riverfly survey at Wardsend. This is the last one of the year before we start again next April.

Spotted again by an eagle-eyed Riverfly monitor!
A second Demon shrimp has been recorded in the Holy Brook, a tributary to the Kennet.
This invasive non-native causes a number of issues. Please Check Clean Dry to make sure you and your river gear doesn't contribute to the spread - see poster for more info #kennetcatchment

🍂 The autumn equinox is here.

As the days become shorter and temperatures begin to drop, our rivers are changing too – for riverflies, this is also a time of seasonal transition.

Riverfly surveyors: if you spot signal crayfish, killer/demon shrimp, or zebra mussels — don't touch or move it. Photo it, note the spot, report via iRecord/INNS Mapper, then Check Clean Dry your kit.

Welcome and congratulations on becoming a Riverfly Monitor! @robgmacfarlane.bsky.social has inspired a fair few people to seek out Riverfly training days since his tour last year ☺️
#Riverflies are ‘canaries of the river’. Monitoring #Riverfly populations is a great way to evaluate river health. Completed my training with the Tweed Foundation. My journey began when listening to Robert Macfarlane talk about his book, ‘Is A River Alive’, last August. @riverflies.bsky.social

Thanks to funding from ERIC North East, Berwick Riverfly Monitoring Group was able to organise this training and invite the Tyne River Trust to deliver the course. Then Tweed Foundation wanted to deliver instead and recruit a few more folk, so we went with this. Great training! ericnortheast.org.uk

A common misconception is that Riverfly monitoring is only for those living in rural areas, with access to gorgeous streams teeming with fly life...

The Urban Riverfly scheme was developed to allow more meaningful monitoring to be done on rivers where sensitive riverflies are less commonly found.
