Keep solid diplomatic links with the Riverlords so one of them gives you a heads-up if the king decides to march north, then meet at the Neck and ask them if they really want the heat.

(#HotD)
I like the dream sequence stuff at Harrenhal, but now I get confused by actual reality. The scene where Daemon was awoken during the Hour of the Wolf to be chastised by random Riverlords came across to me entirely like a dream. I'll just have to accept it was real.

A version of HotD that is as cynical as GoT would have had Daemon cow and overawe the Riverlords by brute force, removed any resistance to Aemond's regency, and kept most of Hugh Hammer's characterization the same as in the book. This is not actually a very cynical show.
I actually disagree. I don't think HotD is as cynical as people seem to think, especially in Season 2. If it were cynical then Daemon's blustering and bravado would have won over the entire Riverlands. His plotline only works *because* some people will risk a fiery death for their beliefs.

I could see independence still being popular amongst the riverlords.

if i were the riverlords and my despised imperial overlord’s base of power was in tiny islands far away that he had to project power from i would simply start a guerrilla campaign, not wait until a dragon randomly conquers all of us

Which is part of why a bunch of ASOIAF fans consider the speed of the Lannister invasion so implausible -- particularly the capturing of multiple riverlords' castles despite no mention of siege equipment besides that at Riverrun...

how they’re portrayed in the main books is kinda fine until it turns out no, they do actually have a giant fleet and the population to man it. worst of it’s in the lore, where they held onto the riverlands for centuries despite being so despised all the riverlords sided with aegon immediately lol

pretty much ended any chance of good faith with the lannisters/the royal family like maybe if tywin did not do that the northern lords calling for blood might have had second thoughts when the riverlords would probably want peace but like they sacked the bracken castle and burned so many villages

“The longer we wait, the more chance (Daemon) will prevail. Lannister will march from the west. Take what strength we have, and force Daemon and his Riverlords to fight on two fronts.”

The riverlords outside the castle walls said later that the towers of Harrenhal glowed red against the night, like five great candles

But as mentioned, these Tullys are very young and were not really ready for rule… oh, I’ve got the book on my phone I’ll just screencap the passage…

The Riverlords!

In HotD, this is actually challenged. It turns out Daemon's position depended a lot more on being the king's brother than he thought, and when he tries to bully the Riverlords with a dragon, the trump card of violence, he discovers that a lot of people would actually prefer to die in defiance.

New chapter of "A War of Seasons," in which Stannis gets to deal with several women who irritate him and hears (albeit unknowingly) about another one who's going to cause definite problems, on top of the all the other problems he has:

The plotty feudal intrigue stuff with the Riverlords is what the main books feel like, and also the type of storytelling D&D completely abandoned whenever possible on the main show.
