Everyone suffer. I’ve decided to keep track of everything I’m reading this year. And rather than give proper reviews, you’re all gonna get little to no context blurbs. So feel free to mute #RoaReads if you don’t want that.

I kept seeing clips of the “Witch Hat Atelier” anime everywhere, so I thought it was about time I started it myself. Then I learned it was a manga first. So naturally, I decided to read what was available before seeing it animated. I’m sold on this magic system. Give me a pen!

With “The Adventure Zone: Story and Song” coming out, I thought to refresh myself and reread the first six volumes before my copy arrived.

TAZ was special to me from the beginning, and I’m so thrilled to have been able to experience it again through another medium.

Have you ever been so stressed about a white woman’s delusional POV that you skip past secondhand embarrassment and go right to pity? That’s what reading “Yellowface” by R. F. Kuang was like for me. I don’t regret reading it, but lord almighty.

I wanted to pivot to shorter books for a bit, so I picked up “A Short Stay in Hell” by Steven L. Peck. Sometimes, hell is a library filled with more books than there are electrons in the universe, and you have to find the right one to release you from damnation ╮(. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)╭

Hey, so, I agree with the fandom here. They didn’t have Haymitch drink enough. I’ll give him the damn alcohol myself. I’m heartbroken and in shambles. Suzanne Collins is a fantastic author, and if you read this series without grasping the point of it, you’re the Capitol.

3/50 I picked up “Flip” by @ngoziu.com and I have no regrets.

I expected a silly little Freaky Friday romance, but got so more than I bargained for. Which is par for the course with Ngozi’s works tbh. Learning to love yourself is one of the hardest and best things you can do 😭

We love good historical fiction. We also love being torn apart by complicated characters and values dissonance. Before reading, I didn’t know anything about this book apart from the blurb at the back. Boy, did my heart break when I got to the part the summary alluded to 😭

I heard this was getting an anime soon, so I read all 7 translated manga volumes in 3 days. An illegitimate orphan is adopted by her father’s rich family and her new stepmother and stepsister smother her with love. Each chapter is pretty formulaic but wholesome overall.

Respectfully, for something super short “I Who Have Never Known Men” by Jacqueline Harpman felt like it was going on forever. I was initially intrigued by the premise, but that didn’t last when I realized that I wouldn’t be getting answers. Just 1st person POV rambling 😔

“All My Friends are Superheroes” by Andrew Kaufman is about a man trying to get his wife to see him. And in a world of odd people with superpowers, he’s Quirkless.

The worldbuilding was fun, but it wasn’t a heartwarming as I hoped it would be. Oh well ╮(. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)╭

So, the US decided that love was a disease, and the cure is a lobotomy at 18. Our protag can’t wait to get hers… then she meets a boy ╮(. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)╭

This is romance with a dystopian setting. Lauren Oliver can write a good cliffhanger, but it’s 100% written to be a trilogy.

I accidentally got to Chapter 24 of “The Long Game” by Rachel Reid while working out and spent half an hour holding back tears on a treadmill. But anyway, love wins. Toxic masculinity sucks. Everyone should try therapy. I love dogs. Shane loves Ilya and Ilya loves Shane.

It occured to me that I should number these bc I have a reading goal. So anyway 2/50.

To no one’s surprise, I read “Heated Rivalry” by Rachel Reid after binging the series. This filled the sad, ice sports hole in my heart that YOI left behind. We deserve more queer joy in media.

Childlike urges and adult money win again! As much as I would’ve loved to scour for the OG manga volumes, I’m glad that the Cardcaptor Sakura collector’s edition exists in digital format 🙏🏼 I’d still love to get my hands on the physical copies though 😭 #RoaReads #booksky

Classic literature time, folks! I chose “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen specifically to start of love month. Unfortunately for me, I found the 1995 series more engaging than the book. I guess I just wasn’t in the mood for the writing style of the classics. My loss ╮(. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)╭ #RoaReads

I started reading “The Apothecary Diaries” light novels last year, and finally hunkered down to read the ninth volume after a long break. The odd-numbered volumes are usually the set up books, so I wasn’t expecting a lot. I’m interested in all the characters for this arc though.

I haven’t read any of the HG books since I was in high school, but I thought it was a good time to reread the trilogy and the prequels to prep for the movie.

This book is so much harder to read casually as an adult. They were all actual children. They all deserved more.

I nearly DNFed this a dozen times bc a double memoir by an oversharer just isn’t my thing. I stubbornly finished, hoping there would be a point at the end. There was, but its impact wasn’t all that huge to me by then. Miller is a good writer, but trying as a storyteller.

In my quest to read up before HR S2 hits, I decided to crack open “Role Model”. Reformed bad boy X sunshine is such a good dynamic. I would ride into the sun for these two, no questions asked. I love Hollanov, but Troy and Harris are the cutest couple in the series 100%

A good chunk of the conflict in “Game Changer” by Rachel Reid is this quote:

“Kip listened to Scott vent all evening. He kept his own problems to himself.”

The rest of it is Scott Hunter taking ages to realize that keeping important relationships secret is a sucky way to live.

I’ve been meaning to read “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak for over a decade now, and a convenient Goodreads challenge finally got me to it.

This one was a tough read, folks. Not bc it was bad, but bc I knew that anything with the setting of WWII would be hitting a little too close #RoaReads

I’m surprised it took me this long to read “Heartstopper” when it started right around the time I was obsessed with YOI and Check Please, but here I am. Now and then, it’s nice to have low stakes romance. These boys are just dumb and I can breathe while they be dramatic.
