Utah Sen Mike Lee just introduced an amendment to eliminate the Roadless Rule – more closed-door politics to sell out public lands.

The Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee will vote on the amendment to S. 140, “The Wildfire Prevention Act,” tomorrow morning.

“The wildfire is primarily burning vegetation and has had multiple ignition points along Highway 166, a road that cuts across the forest…”

Read it again “a road that cuts across the forest.”

Roads (well, human activities) are a leading source of wildfires.

More roads = more fires.

The Gifford fire, which has been fueled by dry conditions and warm weather, erupted on Saturday into a 23,000-acre blaze within the Los Padres National Forest in California after several small fires merged into one large wildfire, officials said.

I've written extensively about how roads in forests contribute to forest fires, from drying vegetation to creating more chances for ignition by vehicles, tools, and fools. Building more roads in our forests actually increases the risks of more fire!

The #RoadlessRule, established in 2001, protects roadless forests by keeping them free from logging, road-building, and other industrial development.

Senator Lee's amendment threatens to tarnish these lands forever. He claims repealing the Roadless Rule will help prevent wildfire, but it won't.
