I want to get one of those iPods so bad and do the various mods to it - BT (though I love wired headphones), battery and memory expansion (SD), and install Rockbox. Unfortunately, I got into the iPod game late and just have a Touch. It's nice, but no mods for it - not even Rockbox. 😢

What Rockbox skin is that? I've been looking for something that looks as close to the original as possible.

Yes, install RockBox. It’s super easy, and it play either from an iTunes library or from files dragged and dropped on the device. RockBox turned my creaky 4th gen into a legit music player that can play Wagner without gaps between tracks

i did! it sounds like you only need to do that if you plan on using the stock apple OS right? I'm going with rockbox and it seems like there's no such limit there

Is the iPod aesthetic really important to you? Rockbox is compatible with a lot of old devices and you would be able to find something for very cheap on eBay. Look for base-model internal storage (to save on cost) but with a memory card slot to expand that storage by a lot.

My partner's Clip+ died of battery bulge in about 2016 but mine which got used as an externalised BAHA-microphone in an emergency once is still going strong with replaced physical clip.

new cover and backplate came in today actually! i wanted to install rockbox to play around with it beforehand but there was something wrong with the hard drive that i couldn't figure out 🤔ah well, that's all getting replaced with microsd cards anyways

Haha that is exactly the reason why I decided not to open mine for now unless the hard drive dies.
Now that it is open you might also want to change the cover as well :)
