If it’s Rogationtide, when do we get Supererogationtide?

Rogationtide begins today. Processions asked for blessings and protection of crops, as well as 'beating the bounds' to mark the parish boundaries. It often features as the May image in medieval Labours of the Months, as on the far right panel of this 12th Century font, Burnham Deepdale, Norfolk. 1/3

I call Rogation Sunday (and Rogationtide) the Church's "Earth Day".

I wish they'd commodify a few more, rather than confining themselves to Valentine's, Mother's Day, Easter, Father's Day, Halloween and Christmas. Would love to see the supermarket all packed with Wake Monday tat, Rogationtide snacks and May Eve kitsch

And observe Rogationtide.

Beating the Bounds took place in Stratford, Leek Wooton and Kenilworth during Rogationtide. Clergy and parishioners would perambulate the area and at certain points bump or beat local boys to instil in them where the parish boundaries were.

I started out at the church of neighbouring parish Weston-in-Gordano. Might seem odd for 'beating the bounds' of Portishead, but much of the land between the two villages was 'so intermixed' that the villagers went out together on one day of rogationtide to reiterate which fields belonged to each

This began as a small Rogationtide reflection. Something about creation, blessing fields, creaturehood, dependence, the living world. Instead it went off the rails & became a far more direct meditation on loneliness, Therianthropy, embodiment, what it means to live as a creature among creatures.

It’s Rogationtide, the traditional season for asking God’s blessing on growing crops and those who work the land. Just before lunch, some of us joined the Community for their Rogation procession, blessing the orchard, the allotments, and the workshop.

It might also work for Rogationtide.

Beating the bounds of the parish becomes a daunting task with Church decline. Our Episcopal parish's bounds doubled with the closure of an adjacent Episcopal Church. But an ACNA congregation was planted in those bounds. Dueling Rogationtide processions, perhaps? ⚓

If you forgot to do anything to observe Earth Day, fear not! ROGATIONTIDE is right around the corner, May 5-8. The Great Litany in procession with the collects on pp. 207-208 (1979 BCP) would be most appropriate. Get out there and BEAT THE BOUNDS!

I think my mate might still run a Rogationtide service, in rural Oxfordshire..

Popular culture calls it "Earth Day/Month". We had Rogationtide way before that.
See p. 208, and plan a procession.
