Just as there are dog and cat people, there are London and Paris people. I am a London person. I was two days in Paris pre-pandemic and spent them thinking, "I hate Paris." I thought it gloomy, cold, rank, and snooty. I hated the massive boulevards, classical architecture, and yearned for a tree. (I did, however, spend an afternoon in the Musée d'Orsay and that was worth the suffering.) Clayborn's Paris is only as wonderful as her protagonists and I thought them quite wonderful: a self-effacing woman and broken man in the midst of wedding doubts, awkward familial exchanges, and a reunion with a milk-toast ex-husband.

Sullivan's first Minnie Harper mystery, A Death On Corfu, was uneven, suggesting she wasn't quite in control of her material. Death On Corfu started with a Durrellian Family and Other Animals vibe, moved to murder mystery, muddled its way into a romance and ended with...a dissatisfied reader. Murder In Marylebone was a kittycat of a different colour, thoroughly enjoyable, so much so this reader will add another historical mystery series to follow to too many others.
