thankfully for me elderly sinologists just invent their own Romanization systems.
This has been really painful. People I had looked up to as intellectual and moral exemplars ending their careers urging the state to harm people over unconventional gender performance.

Do you spell Shinjuku as "Sinzyuku"? Of course not - only an insane person would. That's how you romanize it, however, under Japan's official Kunrei-shiki romanization system - a system that almost no one uses and that the Japanese government is, finally, preparing to abandon.

Was doing reading on the Taiping Rebellion and Late Qing reformism for TRRPG reasons and could not believe how many different spellings there were of Zeng Guofan, sorry, Tsen Kuo-Fan, sorry, Tsin Kuofen-

Fun fact : Unlike later games in the series, EoSD didn't have any romanization for the in-game characters. The romanization for their names (along with the Prismrivers) were instead given in a blog post in January of 2004, over a year after EoSD was first released.

One of the things that happened is that if you were Chinese and got here early enough, your family members would have different legal last names--that wouldn't even read the same to white people here--because there was no standard romanization.

Neither is more correct than the other: the name of the city is 北京, it's just that under the previous Postal Romanization used by the Chinese (following the Nanking syllabary) it was spelled Peking, in Pinyin Běijīng. (in Wade-Giles it was Pei-ching) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese...

And no, I will never stop bit*hing about #Romanization of Korean. The only way Romanization works is if it's consistent and everyone uses the same Romanization. Otherwise it just confuses people, like the Romanization in the names of the members of TWICE.
