Rootstock! Often, the roots of a tree are different than the trunk. The roots are picked to be hardy and more suited to the environment. But if the upper graph dies, the rootstock can make a new trunk, but it's a different variety. Sometimes yummy things happen, but much rootstock is crab apple!

rootstock: 30/30. 100% germination!
not-rootstock: 59/80 so far. It’s only day 6/7!
wish I’d known to sow the rootstock a week after the others. I think I can cut that tray in half and move them to a cooler location to slow them down a bit, tho 🌱

This year I planted something like 100 trees, mostly rootstock or rooted cuttings. Next year will be trial by fire for grafting.

hey permaculture /gardening 🌱 Bluesky: anybody have success in an urban environment controlling the growth of a large fruit tree with just pruning rather than dwarfing rootstock? Kinda want to grow some American persimmons but they are big boys at maturity

We have a lot of Wood Ferns, as deadwood is not dead, and every tree stays in our woodland, even after they fall asleep
