this helps explain the factories' relatively low throughput and indifferent performance at producing the mechs vs. basic equipment useful for the manufacture of pottery or ropemaking or slash-and-burn farming

I'm reminded also of Gabriel Harvey and the way his disappointed ambition left him open to some spectacular twitting by Thomas Nashe. Nashe's advice was the best: If my father was a rope-maker, I would show ropemaking to be one of the seven liberal arts. (from memory; not an exact quotation)
