Back at my foraging nonsense. Bay, vanilla, & other aromatics are so so good in homemade jams & jellies—especially when balanced with the spicy, complex tang of wild fruit. (Though the pairing of crabapple & vanilla reminds me of nothing more than cotton candy)
Two half-pint Mason jars mostly full of peach-colored jelly of different shades. The lids are labeled in Sharpie: “crabapple + vanilla 10/10/26” and “plum + crabapple jelly w/rosehips + bay, 10/07/26.”

An old track leads through an avenue of oak trees. The track is strewn with rocks and old roots. Bracken by the sides of the path is turning brown and hints of red reveal the red rosehips.

I had a lovely 5hrs hike with my friend. We also used the hike as an opportunity to gather rosehips. That was likely the last hike of this year's Indian summer. The day was fantastic and nature beautiful with its autumnal decoration!

This little section is oddly enough one of my favs in Bear My Heart. Right at the start, before Terra has fully comprehended the consequences of her actions (accidentally mauling a woman, then bringing said woman home).
“With Basilla milked, water troughs filled, and the garden pruned, I find myself standing before Mother and Father’s shrine. Their skulls grin silently at me. Mother with her straight, flat teeth and Father the long, canine fangs. Dried, blue corn flowers rest in Mother’s eyes and I’ve added bright, orange rosehips in Father’s. They would match his fur. “There’s someone here, Mother,” I whisper, painfully aware of the dying woman I left at the front door. “I brought her. I couldn’t just leave her to die. It didn’t feel right. I think she’s from the village.” I swallow and look over my shoulder, worried that the stranger could be eavesdropping. “It won’t matter. I probably can’t keep her alive. We went out foraging last weekend and came back with sufficient for my wife to make two jars of jelly. We were about a month too late for rosehips, though. Having relocated 600 miles north we still have to sometimes make adjustments for shorter seasons up here.

I have identified another local source of rosehips that are still ripe. However, it is around the edge of a car park of a hotel, so if we go harvesting, we will have to be careful not to upset the management.
