Remembering summer storms

Sunlight shines through clouds, accentuating the bright green of trees. Clouds throw dark green shadows, creating drama in the picture. Storm clouds curve in a half circle above the wooded mountains. Wooden decking alternates between flat areas and stairs with the railing forming a zig zag across the lower left of the picture. A large solitary rock juts above the boardwalk. Evergreen trees are predominant at this elevation. Distant peaks of Hawksbill and Table Rock are faint on the horizon line of the picture. The light and shadow add to the drama in the picture.

The picture is taken from a gray rock ledge. A tall tower of stacked rock is in the right lower corner with low vegetation of wild flowers and small plants hiding part of it from sight. A deciduous tree extends higher than the rock in the foreground. A deciduous tree is wind blown in the left corner of the picture. The view falls away beyond the center of the picture with rolling green mountains, which have dark and light green areas from the clouds. Table rock and hawksbill from Linville Gorge can be recognized in the left distance. White clouds are low and flat against a deep blue sky.

The image shows the deep greens of trees, sloping upward on grandfather Mountain across the width of the picture. On the mountain, the S shape of the Linn Cove Viaduct curves around the mountain. Medium grey to white rock is mounded in front of the viewer with green vegetation on either side, and the right corner is anchored with another large piece of rock. Gray clouds are in the upper portion of the picture with one white section slightly offset to the left of center. From this white section a segment of rainbow curves from the cloud to the ground. A fainter rainbow segment curves from the cloud to the ground to the left of the brighter rainbow.

The lower half of the picture is gray rock. The rock consists of fractured layers on the right side of the picture the layers angle upward in the middle of the picture. There’s a relatively flat outcropping and near left the rock layers almost seem to be sticking upward. The upper part of the picture is very blue with white clouds. Finley obscuring the sun and throwing deep dark shadow the rhododendron bushes in the last corner of the picture have leaves that are surprisingly rolled thin, even though the temperatures in the 60s. The bushes on the left are very windswept beyond the gray rock. You can see in the distance, the very gentle rise to the top of grandfather Mountain midway on the mountain the curve of the Linn Cove viaduct can be seen between dark green trees. Beyond grandfather Mountain can be seen to the left the unique peaks of the Jonas Ridge / Linville Gorge area, such as Hawks Bill and Table Rock. The center left of the picture shows in the distance, grandmother Mountain with its cell phone tower, and to the right of Grandmother, more mountains, extending in very light colored, rows of blue into the distance.

The top rock on the left is the iconic Rough Ridge picture rock viewed from from the Tanawha trail right before the trails meet. Linn Cove Viaduct seen in the distance.
The left side and bottom of the photo image contain rocks at a slight diagonal upwards. Beyond these a row of jagged, Evergreen trees point to the sky. Between two sets of evergreen trees points, a rock emerging from the greenery by itself at the same angle as the rest of the rocks in the picture. And evergreen tree tops the picture and finishes out the left side. Wild blueberry bushes and other small vegetation are mixed on the left side of the picture in the distance. A gentle curve of grandfather Mountain rises center of picture to the right. Gray rock emerges in some spots with steep stone faces that defy vegetation. The top of the mountain is darker with Evergreen trees, while the lower slopes are covered with deciduous trees. An “s” shaped curve of the Linn Cove Viaduct of the Blue Ridge Parkway way can be seen snaking across the mountain. The sky is a deep midday blue with starkly white clouds, small and close to the mountain.

David Mack (His beautiful art made Brian Michael Bendis scripts soar. He co-created Maya Lopez (Echo). When David wrote and illustrated stories, such as the incredible Echo Vision Quest he took comics to a completely different level. David is one of artists whose watercolors and mixed media style continues to inspire and delight me. This page is from Daredevil v.2 #17, part of the Wake Up arc (Script by Brian Michael Bendis) Jorge Fornes’ superb layouts and noir inspired characters and environments are incredible. He is such a brilliant storyteller and I love his art. In this page from Knight Time In The City from Phases of the Moon Knight 2, Jorge inspiration from the early ‘80s Moon Knight and ran with it. Script by Jed MacKay and Colors by Lee Roughridge. I really hope Jorge returns to Marvel at some point, because his pages are such a joy to get lost in. Marco Checchetto and Matt Hollingsworth tear up a Punisher #1 page. From the script by Greg Rucka. Marco Checchetto has been my favorite artist for 15 years and counting. His characters, environments, action, and emotion are so instantly compelling and endlessly beautiful. Regardless of the charactet, if Marco illustrates the book I will read it. It’s his quiet scenes that move me the most. And somehow, when I started drawing fan art 8 years ago, Marco always encouraged me to keep going. His art inspired to me homage his art, to draw and write. In creating fan art after his works I grew to appreciate all the hard work that Marco and his peers put in to get where they are. He makes me love comics so much. I fell in love with Ron Garney’s art during his beautiful story in Marc Spector Moon Knight back in the early ‘90s. I always loved his style and enjoyed his Wolverine run amongst others, but with Daredevil v.5, Ron’s characters suddenly felt like they would leap out off the page and become animated. His character’s physicality even when they stand still breaks my brain a little bit. It doesn’t surprise me how naturally his Daredevil moves and fights, Ron is a third degree black belt in Brazilian Ju-Jitsu so his knowledge of martial arts lends Daredevil, B. (from BRZRKR), and Blindspot a realistic flow that would be perfect animated or in live action. The stunt team involved with Disney’s Daredevil Born Again homaged a Garney DD leap in season 1’s episode 7. Would love to see more of that. I love trying to homage Ron’s current inky style and just enjoy staring at his panels imagining them come to life in my mind. This page from Daredevil v.5 #2 is a great example of Ron’s prowess. Look at Daredevil go! It’s such a cool sequence. Script by Charles Soule and colors by Matt Milla. Daredevil v.5 was recently released in Digest form. Charles and Ron’s DD villain Muse was a part of Daredevil Born Again s1 with Muse’s art created by David Mack.
