now that the strings have pretty well broken in, and I've sorted out the setup as it's settled, honestly that first bass plays pretty damn nicely.
way too neck heavy and I still don't really like roundwound strings, but!

Bass guitar stuff: The Rickenbacker 4001 is the prog-rock instrument ne plus ultra (see: Yes, Genesis). The strings had to be roundwound (extremely trebly). Paul McCartney bucked that trend by putting extremely dead-sounding flatwound strings on his Rickenbacker. Unthinkable! But they sounded great.

Finished the day by learning the bass line to "Handshake Drugs." Nailing the specific pattern isn't so important as there are so many variations you can explore, which is what makes it so much to play along with. The only type of Bass strings I've used in 30 years. Rotosound Roundwound. They give my Bass, a dirty, aggressive, trebly growl! Or words to that effect 😆 I still get excited when I take delivery of a new set.

I finally had enough 'disposable' funds to order some flatwound strings for my Precision bass copy, which I've been planning to do for years. They're expensive (almost $100 with shipping!), but they should outlast me - unlike the roundwound strings on it now.
