My headstrong six-year-old fights me on a rule but follows her own checklist without a word. Same task, the difference is ownership.
Does your kid push back more on you, or the plan?

A visible schedule answers what now before your kid asks. Every unasked question is one you did not have to referee.
How many times a day do you hear what can I do?

Biggest unlock: get the schedule out of your head and onto something your kid can see and move. A whiteboard, a picture list, their own checklist.
Where does your routine live right now?

6-year-old. 5-minute warning before every task switch.

28 minutes from pajamas to ready to go.

Usual record: 55+ minutes.

The warning is a tiny thing with a big impact.

The resistance isn't defiance. It's interrupted processing.

A 5-minute warning lets kids mentally finish before the transition.

That's all the resistance is asking for.

Before every transition: "In 5 minutes we're putting shoes on."

A simple warning is the bridge kids need between tasks.

Sounds small. Changes the whole morning.

If you do one thing: ask your kid what needs to happen in the morning. Use their answer. That's the starting point.

8-year-old agrees to 'just 10 minutes.' Timer goes off. Dad checks in. 'I want to finish this problem first.' That's it. Starting was the only real challenge.

One thing from this week: get to their level before you say a word.

Walk over. Eye contact. Then talk.

10 seconds. Works the first time you try it.

Why it works: 'homework' is an unknown quantity. '10 minutes' is survivable. Lower the commitment, remove the overwhelm, get them started. Momentum does the rest.

Your kid isn't ignoring you on purpose. They're just wired to lock in.

Change the signal — proximity, warnings, visuals — and mornings get better fast.

The 10-minute rule: commit to just 10 minutes of homework, then check in. Lowers the barrier to starting. Most kids are already rolling by the time the timer goes off.

My kid wanted to make their bed BEFORE breakfast. Don't know why. Kept it anyway. They've done it every day since. Kid logic is undefeated.

7-year-old deep in Lego. Walk over, hand on shoulder, wait for eye contact. 'Two more minutes, then shoes on.' They nod. It works.

Same kid. Different approach.

Why it works: you're joining their attention space, not competing with it from across the room.

Face-to-face lands. Voice from the hallway doesn't.

Before you say a word: walk over. Get to eye level. Wait for eye contact. Then give the instruction.

10 seconds. The instruction actually lands.
