Rowrbrazzle, a fanzine, co-created by Marc Schirmeister, Timothy Fay and John Cawley in 1983 as the result of Vootie's demise.

Fred Patten, an important figure of the early furry fandom, considers the launch of RowrBrazzle the moment when the furry fandom started transforming into the modern one.

Today is my 34th #Furryversary!
Aug 4, 1990 I attended Tachy2Con in Deland Florida. I wore a sad fox-colored head sock. Thankfully no photos exist.

I was suggested to check out Rowrbrazzle, then back at college I posted about it on Usenet group rec.arts.comics

New in the mail, a really exciting piece of furry history: Rowrbrazzle #1 (February 1984), the publication that fan historian Fred Patten asserts was the moment when furry first came into being as its own distinct culture. Only ~30 copies were printed.

Cover Art for RowrBrazzle 161, April 2024. Featuring space alien superspy bunnygirl SnowBuni. Both RowrBrazzle and SnowBuni have been in print for 40 years now, since 1984.

Wait Rowrbrazzle still exists?! 25 years in the fandom and I find this out *now*? :)

New in the mail: Rowrbrazzle 159, with my own little contribution, a brief intro to satyr plays. I'm endlessly tickled that this bunch of cool artists and writers let me tag along in the oldest continuously running furry publication (turning 40 years old in a few months!)

Many rowrbrazzle pages here might have been reprinted in other books, might be unpublished anywhere else outside of Rowrbrazzles, etc. Samplers/Showcases were made as temporary advertisements at the furry cons for understanding rowrbrazzle. Only 200 or less copies made each. No reprints of books 3/3

Short answer: furries begin coalescing in the late 70s w/ underground/alt zines and sci fi/fantasy conventions. First generally accepted distinctly furry publication is Rowrbrazzle, which debuted Feb. 1984. Earliest instance in print of the word furry is July 5, 1985 in a LosCon daily update flier

It's also deeply satisfying (if entirely coincidental) that the Rowrbrazzle fanzine began the same year as the #TMNT comic.

I will be showcasing 12 selected pages here from the five upcoming Rowrbrazzle Samplers/showcases books to be scanned in as a whole set for the internet archive. We do work with Furry Preservation (telegram) and Furry Archive (discord) groups. Saving / showcasing furry history much as possible! 1/3

New in the mail: Rowrbrazzle Sampler 1 (1989), with a short reflection on funny animals by Jim Korkis (whose work as a Disney historian I know well and as a comics historian a little bit, but who until now I had no idea also travelled in furry circles). This is on the crankier end of his writing.

Inspiration from The ConFurence Archive today. Extremely powerful ancestor. ❤️‍🔥 Take a look at this archive!

Yes! Furries were represented in Los Con years before Rowrbrazzle started. This is also the convention that both co-directors of Confurence 0 met.

Rowrbrazzle might've declared furry independence then, but the fandom existed and held private events before. Furry wasn't a moment, it was a movement.

Check it out!

Musical Cat Bits #3 by Tom Verre. This seems to have been included in a copy of Rowrbrazzle from 1991.

Funnily enough, Swinton Scott III (animation timer on seasons 5 and 6 of American Dad!) was a Rowrbrazzle member, according to the late furry artist and author Chuck Melville!

The screenshot's from season 4, btw.

Vootie (1976-82) and Rowrbrazzle (1983 onward) predate the first use of the term, but it's clear that a furry community is forming in them, and groups centered on Gallacci start developing during/after the 1980 Worldcon. C/FO and ConFurence are important, but it's more complex and goes back further.

Interested about The APA Rowrbrazzle or joining it as a member?

Today's "you never know what you'll find": I popped into one of my local comic shops (Outer Limits in Waltham) while waiting for a prescription to be filled and this 1989 holiday card from Tom Linehan (former Rowrbrazzle member) was in a box of zines. The owner (Steve, great guy) just gave it to me.
