Wintry if in this case light polluted sky. I love the colours of the stars of Orion and its neighbouring constellations. Timely after a brilliant day @royalastrosoc discussing ALAN and a move for DAN.

Beautiful and inspiring talk by artist @ioneparkin tonight at @royalastrosoc. An extraordinary mix of media, themes, colours and ideas, encompassing everything from moons in the solar system to the grandest scales of the universe.

Tonight we're hosting a behind-the-scenes tour of the @RoyalAstroSoc, titled 'A Tale of Two Transits' ✨

The event is sold out, but those lucky enough to get tickets will be shown original documents and photos relating to the main celestial event of 1874 – the Transit of Venus.

Open House at the @royalastrosoc today. My colleagues Jawaher, Marieta, Nancy, and Sian (and Lucinda - not in short) joined by Caroline and John Herschel. It's also a rare chance to see our rare books, including Principa, Sidereus Nuncius and one from 1477.

🔬 The Chemistry of the Universe
Prof Mike Edmunds (@royalastrosoc) dives into the origins of the elements and the wild chemical landscapes we might find beyond Earth. Could alien worlds support life in forms we’ve never imagined?

The Chemistry of the Universe – Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution
There is the real and fascinating probability that in the future we will be confronted with extraterrestrial worlds whose physical conditions and compositions result in chemistries radically different from our own. This talk (the Humphry Davy Lecture, first given at the Royal Society of Chemistry in London last autumn), outlines our current knowledge of the origin and distribution of the elements in the universe, and the investigation of dense interstellar environments. These imply a huge unexplored range of chemical possibilities and may lead to profound implications for life in the Universe. It is suggested that extensive theoretical investigation of these enticing possibilities may be both possible and necessary. Mike Edmunds is Emeritus Professor of Astrophysics at Cardiff University, and the immediate past-President of the Royal Astronomical Society. He is a Vice-President of the Herschel Society and an Honorary Vice-President of the Society for the History of Astronomy. He can occasionally be seen in his one-man play about Newton - Sir Isaac Remembers… He was the subject of BBC Radio 4’s The Life Scientific in April 2024, also appearing on In Our Time in November.

Either the scientists from the @RoyalAstroSoc project have discovered a new form of phosphine which we have never seen not created organically...

Or they have discovered crucial evidence for life on #Venus.

Yes, there are lots of things to confirm and test...

But life. Life.
