Rueben Bain’s struggles have been uniquely apparent for a rookie

Rueben Bain Jr., a standout defensive end from the Miami Hurricanes, was selected 15th overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2026 NFL Draft. Despite being a consensus All-American and ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Bain slid out of the top 10 due to concerns about his short arm length and past car accidents. Bain’s arms measured 30 7/8 inches, among the shortest for any defensive end at the NFL combine. Teams were also aware of a serious 2024 car accident that left a passenger in a coma and eventually led to her death, along with a subsequent accident in 2025. Although cleared of careless driving, Bain’s lack of full transparency about these incidents reportedly influenced his draft position. Post-draft, Bain expressed confidence in his abilities, stating he believes he can excel at the next level. The Buccaneers plan to pair him with Vita Vea on the defensive line, recognizing both his talent and the challenges he brings. While analysts consider Bain’s selection a solid pick, his draft slide reflects the complexities teams weigh when balancing talent, physical attributes, and personal history.
